Et oui, je suis encore à l’hôpital.  On essaie encore d’équilibrer mon calcium et mon phosphate, mais on me pique beaucoup moins.  On a profité du fait que je suis encore ici pour voir des spécialistes avec lesquels je n’avais des rendez-vous que dans deux semaines alors au moins ça a ses avantages.  On a eu la mauvaise nouvelle cet après-midi que ma biopsie de moelle osseuse du 6 septembre n’avait pas fonctionné, alors on doit la recommencer demain matin.   Vos prières et pensées sont appréciés.

Yes, I’m still at the hospital.  We are still trying to balance my calcium and phosphate, but they’re poking me a lot less often.  They took advantage of the fact we were still here to today to squeeze in appointments with specialists we were only suppose to see in a few weeks, so it does have it’s advantages.  This afternoon we got the bad news that my bone marrow biopsy done on september 6th didn’t work, so we have to start over tomorrow morning.  Your thoughts and prayers are much appreciated.

Après les deux semaines d’attente on s’est rendu de bonne heure à l’hopital hier.  J’étais bien heureuse d’y retrouver les infirmières qui m’aiment tant.  On m’a piqué la tête encore… Ils l’aiment vraiment ma tête ces infirmières!  Puis on a rencontré l’hématologue qui nous a expliqué qu’on s’enlignait définitivement vers une greffe de moelle osseuse.  On attend juste les résultats du typage HLA pour commencer la recherche d’un donneur.  Malheureusement les tests de sang ont montré que mon hémoglobine était basse et que j’aurais besoin d’une transfusion de sang.  Pour compliquer les choses, mon calcium était aussi très bas, et il fallait le faire monter avant de faire la transfusion.  Après quelques heures d’attente, je suis donc monté à une chambre où j’ai eu du calcium par intraveineuse pendant 6 heure avant d’avoir la transfusion pendant la nuit.  Tout s’est bien passé (pour ceux qui s’y connaissent mon hémoglobine est remontée à 105!!).  Tout le monde ici craque pour mon beau sourire et mes grands yeux bleus.  Ils m’aiment tellement qu’ils ont décidé de me garder avec eux un peu plus longtemps.  On a ajusté mes médicaments et on doit s’assurer que l’équilibre est bon pour que mon calcium et mon phosphate restent normaux sans l’aide d’intraveineux.  J’ai bien hâte qu’on m’enlève le tube qui me pend de la tête et tout le ruban gommé qui le tient en place.  J’ai essayé de m’en occuper moi-même à quelques reprises, question de ne pas déranger les infirmières, mais papa et maman m’en empêche à chaque fois.  Je vous envoie tous de beaux coucous et je vous remercie de vos prières et pensées positives.

After two long weeks of waiting, we left bright and early for the hospital yesterday.  I was really happy to see all of the MDU staff that love me so much.  They poked me in the head again….Those nurses sure like that head of mine! Then we met with the hematologist who explained that we were definetly heading for the bone marrow transplant.  We’re just waiting on the HLA typing results to start the search for a donor.  Unfortunatly, the blood drawn showed that my hemoglobin was low and that I would need a blood transfusion.  To make things more complicated, my calcium was also very low and needed to be raised before getting the tranfusion.  After a few hours of waiting we got a room upstairs and got 6 hours of IV calcium, followed by the transfusion over night.  Everything went well! (for those with médical knowledge, my hemoglobin went back up to 105!!).  I’ve got everyone here wrap around my little finger.  They can’t resist my contagious smile and my beautiful big blue eyes.  So much so that they decided to keep me a little longer.  We’ve ajusted my meds et must make sure my calcium and phosphate levels stay up without the help of the IV.  I can’t wait for them to take out that annoying tube that’s hanging from my head.  I’ve tried taking matters into my own hands and yanking it out myself (I know how busy the nurses are and figured I’d do them a favor), but every time mommy and daddy stop me from doing it.  I send you all a big hello and thank you for your prayers and positive thoughts!

Bon voilà quelques temps que je n’ai pas écrit, alors je me suis dit que je viendrais me pointer le bout du nez pour vous faire un petit coucou!  Pas beaucoup de choses ont changés depuis la dernière fois, mais j’ai eu 4 mois cette semaine.  On a des rendez-vous à l’hôpital vendredi et papa et maman espèrent bien qu’on obtiendra les résultats des tests et qu’on saura où s’enligner.  En attendant, j’ai commencé des médicaments pour corriger mes os.  Je dois prendre des gouttes de phosphate 4 fois par jour.  Pas trop compliqué vous pensez?  Et bien elle doivent être séparées de mon lait d’au moins 1.5h donc c’est fini la vie facile ou on me donnait du lait quand j’en voulais.  En plus, les gouttes n’ont pas bon goût et ils m’irritent la gorge. Papa et maman essaient de me donner quelques gorgés d’eau après, mais je ne suis pas folle,  je sais trop bien qu’ils veulent juste me le faire avaler.  Je n’aime pas ça, mais je commence à m’habituer, ce qui est le plus difficile c’est d’avoir à attendre entre les boires.  En plus, mes gencives font mal.  Je ne sais pas trop pourquoi, mais papa et maman essaient toujours de me faire bouger la langue pour les regarder.  Je ne sais pas trop ce qu’ils cherchent, mais je n’aime pas ça. 

À part ça, j’ai fait tout plein de choses amusantes récemment!  Je suis allée magasiner avec mon amie Brielle, je suis allée voir papa jouer au hockey, je suis allée essayer la balançoire et la chaise haute des jumeaux  Musal (j’ai bien hâte qu’ils arrivent pour que je puisse jouer avec eux!!), j’ai joué aux cartes avec mon oncle Stephane et matante Sara, j’ai passé du temps avec mononcle Christian, matante Sophie, matante Marianne, matante Tammy, matante Christiane et Véro, Manon, grand-papa et grand-maman Boulerice et Lauzière et mes grandes tantes Desneiges, Pauline et Claudette et j’en manque!

En gros, je suis bien heureuse et j’apprécie beaucoup votre appuie!  Je vous laisse avec une photo de moi tout émerveillée par un bouquet de fruits que les collègues de maman nous ont envoyé.

Well it’s been a while since I last wrote so I thought I’d pop by and say a little hello!  Not much has changed since last time, but I did turn 4 months old on Monday.  We have appointments on Friday and mommy and daddy really hope we’ll get the test results and have a better idea of what is to come.  Meanwhile, I’ve started taking meds for my bones.  I have to take phosphate drops 4 times a day. Not so hard you say?  Well it’s not so easy because  they have to be separated from my milk by atleast 1h30mins.  So the times of being fed whenever I feel like it are over and to top it off the drops irritate my throat.  Mommy and daddy try to give me a few drops of water after, but I’m not crazy, I know all  too well that they just want me to swallow.  I don’t like it, but I’m starting to get used to it, the hardest thing is really having to wait between feedings.  To top things off my gums really hurt.  I don’t really understand why, but mommy and daddy keep trying to take a peek inside my mouth, and don’t know what they’re looking for.

Aside from that, I’ve been doing tons of fun things lately!  I went shopping with my friend Brielle, went to see daddy play hockey, went to test drive the Musal twins’ swing and high chair (I can’t wait for them to get here so we can have play dates!!), I played cards with mononcle Stéphane and matante Sara, spent time with monconcle Christian, , matante Sophie, matante Marianne, matante Tammy, matante Christiane and Véro, Manon, grandpa and grandma Boulerice and Lauzière, mamie and my great aunts Desneiges, Pauline and Claudette et a lot more!

All in all, I’m very happy et really appreciate your support!  I leave you with a picture of me amazed with a bouquet of fruit given to us by my mommy’s collegues.

Tous les tests sont finis pour cette semaine!  Aujourd’hui on m’a endormie pour me faire un CT scan, un MRI et une ponction de la moelle osseuse ainsi que le test de code génétique que mes parents on fait aussi afin d’établir la compatibilité dans le cas où on passait à une greffe de moelle osseuse.  Ce sont les derniers gros tests avant d’avoir plus d’information sur le type d’ostéopétrose qui m’affecte, mais ça peut prendre quelques semaines.  (Alors ne soyez pas surpris si vous n’avez pas de nouvelles pour quelques temps.  Nous sommes tous les trois très fatigués et profiterons de la fin de semaine pour se reposer un peu comme on ne sait pas encore ce qui nous attend la semaine prochaine.)  On a appris hier que mon ouîe est parfaite (le prof de musique en maman s’est évidemment réjouie de cette nouvelle!).  On a aussi appris que certaines formes d’ostéopétrose réagissent mieux que d’autres à la greffe de moelle osseuse, alors ce ne sera pas noir ou blanc quand viendra le temps de prendre la décision, mais papa et maman préfèrent ne pas trop y penser avant d’obtenir les résultats.  Pour ceux qui demandent s’ils peuvent se faire vérifier pour voir s’ils seraient compatible, on en n’est pas là encore.  Comme vous savez, une greffe de moelle osseuse comporte beaucoup de risques et il faudra peser les bienfaits et les risques lorsqu’on saura quel type d’ostéopétrose est en jeu. All the testing is done for this week!  I got a CT, MRI and a bone marrow puncture done while I was put to sleep today, as well as a genetic marker test that my parents took as well to understand what gene is affected and whether or not they are matches if it came to a bone transplant.  They are the last big tests before we can get more information on the type of osteopetrosis I have, but it can take a few weeks to get the results. (So don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from me for a little while.  All three of us are very tired and will make sure to rest this weekend as we don’t know what next week holds for us.) We found out yesterday that my hearing is perfect (The music teacher side of my mommy was overwhelmed with joy by this news!)  We also learned that some types of osteopetrosis react better to the bone marrow transplant the others, so it will not be black or white when the time comes to make a decision on what to do, but mom and dad prefer not to think about that before we get the results. Many of you have asked what the procedure is to get tested and be a potential donor, but we are not there yet. As you may know, a bone marrow transplant can be very risky and we will have to weigh the benefits vs risks when we know what type or osteopetrosis we are dealing with. This being said, I would like to thank you all for your support!!  If your message appears on the page, it means that mommy and daddy have read it.  Know that they truly appreciate your words of encouragement.

Ma journée aujourd’hui a été longue.  Pourtant, papa et maman m’avaient dit que j’avais juste deux petits rendez-vous et que ça passerait vite.  En premier, on s’est rendu en anesthésie en préparation pour ma journée de tests (CT, MRI, ponction de la moelle osseuse, on a aussi appris aujourd’hui qu’ils essaieraient de faire mes prises de sang pour vérifier mon code génétique pendant que je dors pour me faire moins mal!) qui aura lieu vendredi. Tout s’est bien passé et ça n’a pas pris trop de temps.  Après, il fallait attendre avant de me faire vérifier les yeux, alors on est allé faire un tour au centre d’hématologie et d’oncologie où mon infirmière d’hier, Mimi, si contente de me voir, est allé me pavaner devant les autres familles du centre.  Ceux qui me connaissent savent à quel point j’aime faire des façon à tout le monde.  À 3h nous nous sommes rendu à la clinique d’ophtalmologie et nous avons du attendre très longtemps parce que le spécialiste était en salle d’opération.  L’examen s’est très bien passé.  Le spécialiste dit que me yeux semble normaux et était lui aussi très impressionné par le fait qu’on m’avait diagnostiqué à un si jeune âge avec si peu de symptômes. Il faudra vraiment que je donne un gros câlin au Docteur Dust la prochaine fois que je le verrai et aussi à Lorraine Gauthier pour m’avoir référée à un si bon pédiatre!   Le spécialiste dit que les nerfs autour de mes yeux semble un peut plus mince qu’à l’habitude ce qui pourrait indiquer qu’il y a une certaine pression exercée par les os, alors il enverra la recommandation de procéder avec le traitement le plus agressif possible afin de sauver ma vision qui est encore intacte.   Ce sont de très bonnes nouvelles, puisque j’aime bien regarder partout à l’entour de moi et j’espère qu’on procède à la greffe avant que ma vision soit affectée.  On a quitté l’hôpital à 6h et cette photo a été prise en arrivant chez grand-maman et grand-papa Lauzière pour souper.

Mommy and Daddy said I only had two appointments today, so none of us expected it would be such a long day.  We got to the hospital before 1pm and didn’t leave until 6.  We started off in  anesthesiology to prep for my day of tests (MRI, CT and marrow puncture, and we found out today they may even do the DNA blood work at the same time to save me some pain!) which will take place Friday.  The appointment was short and sweet, so we had some time to kill and went to the hematology-oncology clinique to sort some things out and ran into Mimi, my nurse from yesterday, who was very excited to see me.  She took me to do the rounds and show me off, and I just smiled for everyone.  At 3pm we went to the ophtamology clinic and had to wait a really long time because the specialist was performing a surgery.  When we finally got to see him, we got good news.  My eyes seem normal and he was very impressed that I had been diagnosed at such a young age with so few symptoms!  I’ll definetly have to give Dr. Dust a big hug the next time I see him, and Lorraine Gauthier as well for refering me to such a great pediatrician!  The one thing he did notice is that the nerves around my eyes seems a little thinner then normal and this may be an indication that there is some pressure, and because of that he will recommend that we get started with the treatment process as soon as possible to save my eyesight.  This is very good news because I love to look at everything around me and really hope I get the transplant before my sight is affected.  We left the hospital around 6pm and the picture above was taken as we arrived to grand-papa and grand-maman Lauziere’s for dinner.

Aujourd’hui j’ai eu mon premier rendez-vous à CHEO.  On a rencontré la spécialiste en sang Dr. Bassal, qui a expliqué à mes parents que le diagnostique était pas mal conclusif.  On devra faire une biopsie de ma moelle osseuse pour avoir la confirmation officielle, mais c’est plutôt une question de savoir la sévérité du syndrome et les gènes affectés.  Ça a été une longue journée.  Nous sommes arrivé à CHEO à 9h15 et nous sommes partie vers 15h.  Mes parents sont très impressionnés par la vitesse à laquelle tout se déroule.  On a rencontré Dr. Bassal, on m’a mesuré, pesé et pris mes signes vitaux, on a rencontré Marika, l’infirmière de la spécialiste en os qu’on rencontrera jeudi, puis Christine, l’infirmière qui s’occupe de mon cas.  Et oui, j’ai une infirmière qui coordonne tous mes rendez-vous pour moi et que mes parents peuvent téléphoner si jamais ils ont des questions.  Elle est très gentille et je lui ai fait pleins de beaux sourires.  Ensuite les tests, on a pris des prises de sang (et oui, encore).  Je n’aime pas ça me faire piquer, et cette fois-ci on a choisi une veine dans ma tête.  Il y avait tellement de petites bouteilles à remplir qu’ils ont du me piquer à deux places différentes!  Ensuite j’ai fait un test de densité osseuse.  Ça j’ai bien aimé ça, la machine faisait du bruit et j’étais bien intriguée par la lumière qui bougeait.  Puis finalement les rayons X.  On a attendu très longtemps parce que les techniciennes n’arrivaient pas à croire qu’on voulait tant de photos d’un tout petit bébé comme moi, mais finalement Marika est venu leur confirmer que c’était bien le cas et on a pu procéder.  Je n’ai pas du tout aimé ça me faire tenir en place et je me suis assurée que tout le monde soit bien au courant que je n’étais pas heureuse,  ça a fait mal à papa et maman de me voir ainsi, mais aussitôt le test terminé, j’ai retrouvé ma bonne humeur habituelle.   Dr. Bassal nous a averti ce matin que les deux prochaines semaines seraient très chargées et c’est bien le cas.  Demain nous rencontrons l’ophtalmologiste parce que la densité de mes os peut écraser des nerfs et affecter ma vision et mon ouïe (entre autre), et l’anesthésiste puisqu’on devra m’anesthésier pour ma biopsie, un MRI et CT scan qui auront lieu tout en même temps, probablement jeudi.  En plus de tout ça, on a appris qu’on ne fait pas de greffes à CHEO, alors quand on sera rendu à cette étape là, il faudra se rendre à SickKids à Toronto ou à Sainte Justine à Montréal.  Malgré cette grosse journée j’étais très de bonne humeur ce soir.  Je jasais avec mes parents et j’ai ri à cœur joie en prenant mon bain.

Today I had my first appointment at CHEO.  It was a very long day.  We got there at 9 :15am and left around 3pm.  I might my blood specialist Dr Bassal, who explained to my parents that although we had to get a biopsy of the bone marrow to officially confirm the diagnosis, it is certain that I have a strain of that disorder.  It’s just a question of knowing the degree and which genes are affected.  We then met Marika who is the bone specialist’s nurse.  We will be meeting her Thursday.  We also met Christine who is the nurse in charge of my case.  Yup, I have a nurse that coordinates all of my appointments and who my parents can call with questions and concerns.  She  isvery nice and I was all smiles for her.  Then came the tests!  We did blood work and they put the needle in my head (I wasn’t to happy about that!).  There were so many little bottles that they had to prick me twice to get all the blood they needed.  Then we did a bone density test.  I loved that.  The machine made a funny noise and I was very intrigued by the moving lights.  The last test of the day were X-rays.  We had to wait a long time, because the technicians just couldn’t believe needed that many pictures of a little baby like me, but finally Marika came to sort it all out and we got started.  I hated being held in place, and made sure everyone knew how unhappy I was.  It was for mommy and daddy to watch, but as soon as it was done, I was my happy little self again.  Dr. Bassal had warned us that the next two weeks would be very busy, and she wasn’t kidding.  We’re back at CHEO tomorrow to see the ophtalmologist (my bone density can put pressure on nerves, which among other things can affect my sight and hearing) and the anesthesiologist since I’ll anesthesiology for my biopsy, and MRI and a CT scan which they will all do at the same time, hopefully on Thursday.   On top of all of that my parents found out that bone marrow transplants aren’t done at CHEO, so we will have to go to SickKids in Toronto or Sainte Justine in Montreal when the time comes.  Although it was a long day, I was as happy as can be tonight, babble away and had loads of fun in the bath!
